The possibility to measure human body temperature, and the wireless transfer of information through the human body, with an option to set the alarm in case of deviations from preferred levels
A project application was submitted within the open call for project proposals “Technology Transfer Office Support Program” by the Croatian Agency for SMEs, Innovations and Investments (HAMAG-BICRO). The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology Osijek (FERIT Osijek), in cooperation with TERA Tehnopolis, submitted the project proposal, which realised a grant for the implementation of the “Wireless sensor network for analogue signal acquisition”, resulting in the development of innovative technology for energy-efficient wireless sensor network for analogue signal acquisition. Based on that technology, the researchers developed a prototype of a device for measuring body temperature and wireless transfer of information to the central node via the human body.
The idea was developed within the Proof of Concept (PoC) programme, with TERA Tehnopolis as the centre for Programme implementation in Eastern Croatia. The PoC programme funded the development of a prototype for wireless measurement of biological signals and the initiation of the international patent protection process. The costs of intellectual property protection were partly financed by the faculty until the project received funding within the TTO programme.
TERA Tehnopolis was responsible for product market preparation and its commercialisation within the TTO programme. As the regional technology transfer office, TERA secured 528,230.50 HRK within the programme. The funds were also allocated by HAMAG-BICRO, to cover intellectual property protection costs, for the production of zero series, certification and market preparation.
At the global level, the product received a confirmation of innovativeness, which resulted in obtaining a patent in the USA, seven EU countries (Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland, Sweden, Great Britain and the Netherlands), as well as China and Korea.
Successful technological product development is followed by commercialisation on the global market. With that objective, the product profile was published in the Enterprise Europe Network database. Promotion of the project at EEN bilateral business meetings in Pécs and Rome resulted in first business contacts. The conference in Rome was especially beneficial because it gathered representatives from the sectors of medicine, pharmacy, medical devices, and IT applications for health necessities. Moreover, first talks of potential commercial cooperation were initiated.
The researchers of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology have a serious commercialisation plan for the innovative product intended for measuring body temperature paired with a smart bracelet for collected data reading. The authors of this attractive product are dr.sc. Tomislav Matić, dr.sc. Marijan Herceg and dr.sc. Josip Job. The product allows continuous remote body temperature measuring, with the possibility to signal the alarm in case of deviations from the preferred levels.
